In 1836 HMS Rattlesnake sailed into Port Phillip Bay on a survey and charting voyage. Among the coastal features named at the time was Point Cooke, named after the First Mate, John M. Cooke. The 'e' has subsequently been dropped through common usage.

Point Cook Coastal Park features abundant birdlife, a historic bluestone homestead, intertidal sand banks and a Marine Reserve. Located 20 km southwest of Melbourne, it is a popular destination for birdwatchers, nature lovers and family groups.

Point Cook was the world's first military air base. Established in 1913, just ten years after the first aircraft flight in history, Point Cook is a nationally and internationally significant aviation site. It is believed to be ther oldest continuously operated and intact military airfield in the world today, and one of the last intact WW1 and seaplane bases in the world.

It is Australia’s most important aviation site, the birth place of the RAAF and military aviation. Point Cook retains intact 1914 and WW1 buildings, a 1920’s seaplane jetty and hangers, together with its WW2 and post war landscapes.

It is also the location of the Royal Australian Air Force museum.

There is much to love about Melbourne. Just ask the locals. This sophisticated world city in the south-east corner of mainland Australia inspires a deep passion in those lucky enough to live here. They love its vibrant energy, staggering choice of restaurants, funky boutiques, café-filled laneways, cool bars, unbeatable galleries, luscious parks and village-like inner suburbs, each with its own special character.

Melbourne, a relatively modern city which is less than 200 years old, never sits still. New futuristic designs add to the fascinating mix of architecture and ensure the skyline is constantly changing. Melbourne is very much about lifestyle. It is no huge surprise to residents that their city has been named in an international poll as the world’s most liveable city.

Melburnians embrace three things in particular:
  • sport (Australian Rules football is almost a religion);
  • fashion (the look is chic with a dash of quirky); and
  • festivals (the calendar is packed year round).
They even embrace their notoriously changeable weather. A standing joke in Australia is that Melbourne can experience four seasons in a day. But, really, it’s just another example of how they have it all!
